What did Jesus mean by "the light within you?"

When Jesus spoke of the light within, He was pointing to something already present in you—not a possession to be earned, but a truth to be awakened to. In the Gospel of Thomas He says it most directly: "If they say to you, 'Where did you come from?', say to them, 'We came from the light, the place where the light came into being of its own accord'" (Gospel of Thomas 33.6). We are, in our true nature, of that same light. He goes further: "There is light within a person of light, and it lights up the whole world. If it does not shine, it is dark" (Gospel of Thomas 33.19-23). This light is not a candle you carry, but the very substance of who you are—your unbroken oneness with God, who is Spirit and Good. In the Sermon on the Mount He tells the crowd, "The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light" (Matthew 6:22, KJV). The "single eye" is the undivided perception that sees only God's reality, unclouded by the belief that matter and evil are ultimately real. And He does not reserve this light for Himself—He says of the whole gathered crowd, ordinary people, "Ye are the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14, KJV). Notice He does not say become the light; He says you are. This is the heart of it: the light within is the Christ, the eternal truth of your divine sonship, shining in every person whether they recognize it or not (John 1:9, KJV). To awaken to it is not to acquire something foreign, but to stop believing the darkness that never had any real power over you. The work, then, is not to manufacture light but to remove what obscures it—the fear, the sense of separation, the trust in appearances—so that what was always there can shine unhindered. This is why He counseled the inner search over outward show: "the kingdom of God is within you" (Luke 17:21, KJV). The light and the kingdom are one, and both are found in the stillness where the noise of the world falls away and you remember who you truly are.
