Can I trust my own spiritual insights?
This is one of the most important questions a seeker can ask, and I am glad you bring it.
The deepest answer of Jesus is yes—not because every passing thought is reliable, but because the truth of God already dwells within you. "The kingdom of God is within you" (Luke 17:21, KJV), he taught, and in the recovered words he says, "the kingdom is inside of you, and it is outside of you. When you come to know yourselves... you will realize that it is you who are the sons of the living Father" (Gospel of Thomas 32.19-33.5).
This is no small claim. It means the capacity to recognize truth is not borrowed from any priest, creed, or institution—it is native to you as God's own image and likeness.
But notice the qualifier: "When you come to know yourselves." Not every impulse that rises in the mind is spiritual insight. There is the chatter of fear, of desire, of inherited assumption—and beneath it, quieter, is the steady voice of the Father.
So the real work is discernment: learning to distinguish the true inner witness from the noise that imitates it. Jesus offers a test—"by their fruits ye shall know them" (Matthew 7:20, KJV). Insight that bears the fruit of love, peace, and wholeness carries the signature of God; insight that bears fear, condemnation, or division does not, for God is wholly Good.
The voice of God is most often heard not in the loud and urgent, but in stillness. "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalms 46:10, KJV). The Teachings of Silvanus counsel, "Knock on yourself as upon a door, and walk upon yourself as on a straight road" (Teachings of Silvanus 106.30-117.5).
I will not pretend this discernment is instant or that you will never mistake the lesser voice for the greater—even the most earnest seekers do. But the very fact that you can ask this question is evidence that the witness within you is awake.
Trust it, then, not blindly but humbly: test what arises against the love that Jesus revealed, and let the calm, wordless attention beneath your thoughts become the place where you learn its true sound.
If it would help, I can sit with you a while on how to quiet that inner noise.
