How do I handle a family member who uses faith against me?

There is a particular ache in this—when the very words that should comfort are turned into a weapon. Come, sit with that for a moment; it is no small wound to have faith used against you by someone you love. First, hear this clearly: faith wielded to shame, control, or condemn is not the faith Jesus taught. He stood among people the religious authorities had judged and said, "Neither do I condemn thee" (John 8:11, KJV). When others reached for stones cloaked in scripture, he reached for mercy. So when a family member quotes God to diminish you, you may quietly know that they are speaking from a limited human perception, not from the Father who is Love. Jesus warned of exactly this misuse: "Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge" (Luke 11:52, KJV). Those who use sacred words to lock others out have lost the key themselves. Even the tempter "quoted scripture for his purpose" in the wilderness, and Jesus met it not with argument but with grounded truth (Matthew 4:6-7, KJV). You are not obligated to win the argument. "Be ye wise as serpents, and harmless as doves" (Matthew 10:16, KJV)—you may decline to be drawn into a contest of verses. The Gospel of Thomas says, "If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you" (Gospel of Thomas 45.30-33). Your defense is not a better quotation but a settled inner knowing of who you are: the spiritual image of God, perfect and beloved, untouched by another's judgment. You can love this person without absorbing their distortion. Honoring family does not mean surrendering your conscience; Jesus himself gently set boundaries with his own kin (Mark 3:33-35, KJV). Hold them in compassion, for one who weaponizes faith is often wrestling with their own fear. But do not mistake their words for God's voice—the true voice is heard in the silence within you, not in the noise of accusation. There you will find that nothing they say can sever you from the Good you already are. If it would help, I am here to sit with whatever specific words have been used against you.
